Frequently Asked Questions

Through the Zanaco Secondary Market Government Securities Trading Portal you can buy and sell GRZ Bonds and treasury Bills conveniently anytime and anywhere.

What are Government Securities?

They are debt instruments issued by the Zambian Government through the Bank of Zambia to raise funds. When you buy them, you’re lending money to the government, which promises to repay a fixed amount at maturity.

What types of Government Securities can I buy in Zambia?

You can invest in Treasury Bills and Government Bonds.
Treasury Bills are short-term instruments (91, 182, 273, or 364 days) sold below face value. At maturity, you receive the full-face value, and the interest earned is the difference between the purchase price and the maturity amount.

Government Bonds are long-term investments (2 to 15 years) issued at face value. Investors receive fixed interest payments (coupons) every six months and get back the full investment amount at maturity.

Who is eligible to invest in Government Securities?

There are no restrictions to eligibility. Business firms, institutions, foreign entities, and individuals are all eligible to purchase Government Securities at the Bank of Zambia. However, there are two key requirements:

  • Every investor must have a local commercial bank account denominated in Kwacha and
  • Every investor must register on the Central Securities Depository at Bank of Zambia. Clients can register online through the Bank of Zambia Investor Portal on this link: https://investorportal.boz.zm.
