Zanaco donates to Lusaka City Council

Zambia National Commercial Bank Plc (Zanaco) today made a donation worth K27,000.00 to the Lusaka City Council at a handover ceremony held at the City Council. The donation which was handed over by Zanaco Managing Director Mr. Henk Mulder and received by His Worship, the Lusaka Mayor, Mr. Wilson Kalumba, marks the Zanaco way of commemorating the 2017 Financial Literacy Week which was launched on Monday, 27th March, 2017 under the theme; ‘Learn.Plan.Afford – to meet Key Life Events’. This is with the objective to sensitise would be couples on personal financial management. The Financial Literacy week campaign will end on 2nd April 2017.

The donation will be channelled towards Financial education technical support to cover financial education training of trainers for members of staff involved in the marriage registry process and printing of educative literature for all couples registering their marriages. The money will also help to purchase furniture for the marriage registry room which will include chairs for the couples and a table for the marriage registrar.

Lusaka City Council was chosen based on the important role the marriage registry plays in one’s life to mark a major life event. Excitement around marriage makes this life event a great teachable moment. Financial education will form part of the counsel provided to couples enabling sustainability of activities.

Speaking at the event, Zanaco Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Henk Mulder said that  Zanaco is a socially responsible Bank which is committed to adding value to the quality of life for not only its customers but also for people in communities where the Bank serves. ‘’As  one of the leading banks in Zambia with the largest distribution footprint and as we live our ambition to be the number 1 digital and transactional bank by 2020 alongside banking the unbanked and bringing tailor made banking services closer to the people, we take  Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) seriously. Our CSR programmes form the basis of economic empowerment and helps improve financial skills among the citizenry,’’ he said.

‘’We are actively participating in the Financial Literacy Week under the theme: ‘Learn.Plan.Afford – to meet Key Life Events’. This fits in well with our Bank’s Financial Fitness Programme.  We believe that in the course of their lives, people experience Marriage as a Key Life Event which is associated with higher levels of responsibility and financial obligations. However, in many instances, couples fail to plan or are inadequately prepared thus causing pressure and stress on household finances which lead to poor choices of financial services to cope with all other life events. It is for these and many other reasons that we saw it fit to add value to the services the Council offers.

It is important to include Financial Fitness in sensitization messages during regular counsel to couples. There are many benefits of Financial Fitness to prosperous families; financially fit citizens have easier access to health services, education and other social economic services.  The importance of financial education before family establishment for better financial outcomes cannot be over emphasised. It is encouraged that couples have financial plans including setting long term financial goals because bad management of finances is one of the reasons couples fail to live in harmony. If every couple was financially fit, that would translate into better cities and a nation,’’ he added

Mr. Mulder also mentioned that Zanaco activities to commemorate the FLW are not only restricted to Lusaka but are also taking place cross its branch and agency network of 48 across all the 10 provinces of Zambia.

Speaking after he received the donation, His Worship the Mayor of Lusaka, Mr. Wilson Kalumba thanked the bank for the gesture saying providing a platform for marriage registry is part of the Council’s Service Delivery adding that the Council is pleased with Zanaco’s donation as it will not only add colour to the marriage registration but more importantly, it  will also help nurture stable marriages.
